So my boy would live in the Birmingham suburbs, but not the Houston/Atlanta/Orlando suburbs

Nothing wrong with the Atlanta burbs in and of themselves. The problem there is transportation. You can't go anywhere without a bottleneck. My sister lives on the northeastern side. Every single trip in any direction other than further northeast has to be planned around the time of day they pass through the beltline area, where it can sometimes take 2 hours or more just to get to the other side of Atlanta.

The trouble with living south of Lake City is that if you want to travel anywhere in the rest of the country it's a three+ hour drive just to get out of the state. But that's not the worst part. The worst part is having to swim in a sea of Yankees if you live within thirty miles of the coast or a large city. I'd almost rather live in Knoxville than live around Yankees.
