They are true believers, not pragmatists.

If you believe every election is life or death and that you hold the power to sway that election, then you cannot ever acknowledge the flaws of your side. You can't criticize Andrew Cuomo because it makes Donald Trump look good. You can't investigate Hunter Biden's connections to China and Ukraine because it might prove Trump is right about the gross corruption of the Biden family. You can't lose the election under any circumstances. You have to debunk, discredit, and ignore everything. If anyone found out that Trump was 1% right about 1% of the topics he spoke about, it could sway a voter his way and that is unacceptable because you have to win the election.
