Looking to get a golf course management certification since I now have golf course financial management under my portfolio. Not sure if there is somewhere that offers this certification. In Nola area.

Beaver,

Is there anything more management related at a lower level, certification instead of degree? The university course is overkill since I already have an undergrad and MBA. I am looking for something to supplement my knowledge base since golf course management is not something i'm familiar with although after a few years i'm getting there. The associate program looks to be tailed to training which is not what i'm looking for.

within that link there is a "University Program" that is offered. You basically would have another Bachelors degree in golf course management. Other than that it is almost a learn on the job situation. You could probably ask a pro at a local club and shadow him/her for a few weeks to learn what is going on. There is no certification for managing a course other than what I linked or another Associate type program.

Thanks. I have a club pro but he is the on course management guy and handles the proshop aspect of things and i'm functioning more as the GM watching the business aspects of golf, F&B and Maintenance. However i'm a state away. Learning on the job will just have to do its just a slow process. The make it worse the club is really taking off after some major renovations and we were just named one of the top 30 in Texas.

I have been on the maintenance side for 20 years now. What are you more focused on learning? Do you want to understand the maintenance side, Pro Shop side or the F&B side? IS it all of the above? University of Georgia and Penn State have online Golf Course management certificates that focus on the Maintenance side of the business. The PGA of America may have some offerings for the Shop side of the business.

Not as much the maintenance side. More of the overall 10000 foot view side. For instance i'm right now in the process of renegotiating the pos system, need for golf now, golf cart leases all of the retail aspects of the course. My maintenance guy is awesome and hits his budget every year so I don't need to monitor that as close as the rest even though I still want an overall understanding. Golf/retail is outside my expertise so the advertising/marketing those types of things are different than what I would normally do in my industry. I've been doing it for about three years now and I've learned a lot but it's a pretty specialized industry.

We are also semi-private so I have to balance the members wants and needs with the public play wants and needs.

Golf is killing it right now. The question is does it sustain after covid.

That’s up to your club imo. No reason it can’t be sustained.
