My general opinion is that if you are getting a long action rifle, get a .30-06 so that in the event you ever do travel somewhere to hunt, you have a rifle with a very wide range of bullet options to do it with. I personally don't see a logical reason to pick the .270, the '06 has a plenty flat enough trajectory for as far as I'm comfortable shooting. Recoil from the .270 is probably less but I've never noticed any difference between them.

Having a short action rifle does save a little weight and length and theoretically should be more accurate than a long action rifle.
