Jerry Moore vs Les Miles
quote:
BOONE – LSU football coach Les Miles makes $3.75 million a year; Appalachian State coach Jerry Moore makes $190,000 a year.
Miles deals with dozens of media requests daily; Moore’s post-practice media meeting one day last week consisted of two students with the school paper.
Moore apologized for cutting the session short; in the couple of hours between two-a-day practices, he had to go home to cut his grass.
I wonder if Les Miles cuts his grass.
And I wonder if Miles ever stops to think that Moore, who will be across the field matching wits when the two Division I defending champions meet in a college football season opener on Saturday, is partly responsible for his huge salary.
The Mountaineers shocked the world in the 2007 season opener with a win at No. 5 Michigan. Not long after, Wolverines coach Lloyd Carr decided to retire.
Losing four straight bowl games and going 1-6 against Ohio State also helped convince Carr that a rocking chair on the front porch sounded nice.
But losing at home to a FCS program — even the best one in the country — got fans to thinking about planting a real estate sign on Carr’s lawn.
Carr leaving opened up one of the game’s dream jobs, and media hype turned full force toward Miles.
He played and coached there under legendary Bo Schembechler, married a Michigan woman, had professed his love for the university.
That, a 32-5 record at LSU and an upcoming national title was enough to convince the Tigers that they didn’t want to lose another coach capable of taking them to the top.
Nick Saban, the Larry Brown of football, had skipped out to the NFL after guiding LSU to a national crown, only to resurface at SEC rival Alabama a couple of years later.
So LSU took Miles’ five-year contract at $1.8 million per and turned it into five years at $3.75 million per.
Moore has won three straight national championships at the FCS level; he’s gotten a $10,000 annual raise after each of his last two national titles, with incentives to earn $25,000 more.
Miles probably pays a guy $10,000 a year to cut his grass.

Moore needs a good showing. maybe miles will hire him next year as a special teams coach.

Here is a news flash. Carr was gonna retire anyways. Moore has been there 17 years, so maybe he likes the school that much. It sounds like this author is just pissing about Les Miles. Whatever.

None of those facts mentioned in the article are going to amount to a hill of beans when the Mountaineers enter Tiger Stadium for their arse kicking on Saturday. I'm sure their coach is a great guy but that will matter not come this weekend.

Don't know if you read the whole article or just the quote (which was ALMOST the whole article) but I don't see as him pissing about Miles...More he was just noting the differences between the coaches and the situations that they are in. Don't be so quick to look at the negative....Not EVERYONE is out to start crap about LSU....except ESPN of course...They HATE you guys and it shows EVERYTIME they are on the air...I bet even their theme song (da-da-dant) has secret words derogating LSU...

Moore sounds like a great guy and ya'll are very fortunate to have him.

App State has an excellent 1-AA caliber team and so did ULM at one time. Being the best in that league does not make you the best at the next level. Sneaking up on Michigan last year has put the bulls eye squarely on your backs when it comes to playing the big boys from now on. I hope you have not bet money on App State winning.

im fairly certain his buyout is exactly the same in this new contract

He faced LSU as a player for Baylor in 1960. The Bears defeated LSU 7-3 in Tiger Stadium. I was at that game, but certainly can't recall the play of an interior lineman for the opposing team.

He was a wide receiver.

Thanks, I stand corrected.

He could probably hire Moore to cut his grass for $10,000 a year!

You know what pisses me off?
These "western north carolina people" think that because they win 3 FCS national championships(which could qualify as LSU playing the practice squad 5 times in games)that they are kings of something and deserve respect. Yeah, they beat michigan, but yeah, they lost to freaking WOFFORD. Wofford..What the hell is that? Sounds like a freaking poodle or something. You can't expect to gain too much respect from people when you can't even beat some junior college.

Nobody i know is betting APP wins but give me the 24 points and ? ?
AND APP fans BELIEVE, so anything is possible, just NOT probable.
Same as last year and the years before. Without FAITH nothing is possible.

The pay raise provision was already in the contract before Lloyd Carr announced his retirement. It was part of the contract when LSU hired him that if he won the national championship that he would be at the 3rd highest paid football coach. (It isn't as entertaining a story as the report quoted, but....). The biggest change in the contract after the terms were renegotiated was the compensation that LSU would be required to pay if LSU terminated Miles before the end of the 5 year term.
