Get off of firefox/chrome and get on a browser like Brave.
Get off of google completely if possible, I just switched to ProtonMail from gmail, which is a Swiss based encrypted email service.
Only google service I can’t give up is YouTube.
Also there is tons of great VPNs out there, even set the VPN up on your phone.
Edit: my philosophy now is pay for privacy, don’t let companies make money off of my use of their apps/services.

Great suggestion. As long as someone can remember the password(s) encrypting device(s) and file(s) is always a smart choice.

That is why I pay for Nord VPN. I have no idea if it is a good one or not, but the IT ppl at my hospital recommended it if I was going to use my personal computer to access the hospital's EMR.
ETA: The parent company of the protonmail that you mentioned is the company that is providing the VPN service for Mozilla. LINK
