Noticed something strange watching The Office over the weekend

I don't know if this has been discussed here before or not, but in the Sexual Harassment episode all of the vending machine items are turned around backwards:
Wife noticed it actually. But I don't remember that being referenced in the episode at all, but we had it on as background noise for the most part, so maybe I missed it. Anybody have any idea what that is all about? A quick Google search makes me believe it was to prevent product placement, but I also feel like there were other times in the show when you could clearly see other products. So who knows.
And yes, that is Toby talking about when Dwight asked him where the clitoris was.

The producers probably didn't want to have to deal with any branding issues from the candy companies

Right. Did you miss this from my post:

Etc, etc...

It's definitely one of my favorites.
"On a website it said 'at the crest of the labia.' What does that mean?"

Let the record show it was ME who noticed it and "it" is found at the crest of the labia.

"HERR'S" changed to "HERRTZ" (or similar).

Parts of "Doritos" and "Cheetos" hidden.
They probably used a variety of methods to obscure known products.

Makes you wonder how much Chili’s was paying them in the second season.

You’ll notice in the pictures you posted, they edited the bags in some way to avoid any clear shot of an actual brand
For the scene in the OP, they probably just didn’t take the time or have the time to do that and decided to turn the candy around as a short cut

Right, but they are still very recognizable brands. And there are numerous other scenes throughout the series that show brand names no problem.
In the Jim/Pam jinx episode, doesn't she say he owes her a Coke? Or does she just say soda? I thought it was Coke.

was this in the first season? show probably hadn't really caught on yet, so product placement companies weren't beating down their doors.
But that is terrible art department practice to turn all those labels like that .... for those instances you have your graphic designer create believable packaging. Even bad reality shows can do better ...

I can see it being a metaphor of people turning their back on this one as a "we ain't touching this" statement. But I believe others are right though; it's most likely a branding issue. They may not have been able to properly hide products as usual, or they noticed at the last minute and did a quick solution. It could also be they normally don't care, but this sexual harassment subject may have forced them to be extra careful with product placement.
Could be all of the above

Probably didn't want to ruffle feathers at the candy companies by having their products prominently featured in a scene with this...

So the episode the OP mentioned was from Season 2. Jim also puts Dwight's desk stuff in the vending machine this season as well, covering up other brands of chips and candy.
In season 3, Karen & Jim go on a hunt for Herr's Salt & Vinegar chips (which were in the machine all along actually but not noticed for whatever reason). As Speedy pointed out, they changed Herr's to Herrtz on the bags of chips.
After season 3, you'll notice that they don't hide the Herr's and Utz branded products in the machines. Both companys are based out of Pennsylvania and I'm sure they were more than willing to let The Office display their products considering how many scenes are shown on the break room.
The first time I saw those Raisnet bags placed backwards it caught my eye. I spent almost 10 years in the vending machine business, I can't help but exam one each time they put one in a show or movie, lmao. Karen had good taste though. Herr's Salt & Vinegar chips are damn good, as are most of their other products. Utz finally started making it's way heavily into Southern states when they acquired Zapps around 2011 I think.

Which is strange since the talk about the Herr's chips in the actual episode. Also, while googling about this I saw several sites point out that the chips Karen wants are actually in their vending machine.
