We are in the market for a puppy since our Dobey passed. (best dog ever) Thinking of getting a Airedale, one of the few large dogs that do not shed or doesn't shed a lot.
No I don't want some poodle mix.

Why must it be a big dog?

I can see the OT is going to let me down again. Man how this place has fallen.
Admin, can this please be moved to the OB?

Rookie mistake, you've got to switch the wild ones over to a 100% corn feed and clean them out for a few days. They'll make an excellent gravy.

They can be very sharp dogs why not get a dog that has not been all fricked up by breeders in the past 20 years

My neighbors had one when I was a kid. Great dog. Very mellow.
This was in the early 70’s though, so I can’t promise you the breed has not evolved.

You can make that happen on your own.

Yea but it doesn't let you list which board to move it to.

If you're going to get a puppy, why not get another dobe?

Why not a standard poodle?

Have a friend who has one now and had two before. They seem to be good dogs with an even temperament from what I can tell. When we visit I never feel like its annoying or bad, and he hasn't done any special training. The dog seems happy and gets along with kids and other dogs including a smaller more active dog and a puppy. Don't know anything about their health traits or issues, but I've been around much worse.

I haven’t seen an Airedale in years.I knew an old lady that had one long time ago,he was good with kids.He was a good watchdog and protective of the old lady.
Poodles don’t shed but they have to be clipped a few times a year..

Fantastic, beautiful dogs with a whole nother level of energy. Get it trained early and keep up with the training. They are a handful but a wonderful breed.
Maybe it was just my brothers dog but that was his experience.

Check out soft-coated wheaten terriers. We love ours!
ETA also large/non-shedding

Standard poodle, I wanted an Irish terrier but wife wanted a standard poodle.... he’s 75 lbs of steel almost 2 years old and smart as hell and dumb as hell at the same time. He can’t help but run to meet another person or dog, cat, anything... but he’s also protective of the house and my wife/kids. Never thought I’d get one but no regrets

I've always liked Airedales and have enjoyed the ones I've spent time with but never owned one so can't add much there.
As for non-shedding though, take a look at Standard or Giant Schnauzers. Very different from the toy miniatures. Giants are kinda goofy like a Great Dane, great family members but also very protective against outsiders. I've had a Giant before and he was a wonderful dog. He forgot he wasn't so little anymore and still wanted in my lap and loved to be babied, but also loved to have a job to do and would give his life if needed to protect his family. I'd love to have one again when my daughter gets a little older but would also consider a Standard. The Giant is frankly a lot of dog and that comes with a bigger food bill and waste issues. Standard has all the benefits of the Giant without being quite so big.
