My duck boat had a harbor freight winch attached to a small receiver style hitch I had made out of 2 inch square tube and welded to front deck of boat. I would get to the levee, pull winch out of dry box, slip into reciever, use jumper cables to attach to battery posts and pull over levee, then throw back in dry box. It kept winch from getting splashed all the time. Worked fine for me.

I've thought of doing something like this many times. How heavy is the Harbor Freight winch that you used?

I think it was a 2500lb winch , like the size u see on 4 wheeler .. been a few years ago.... boat was 1642 tunnel hull with mercury 40... I loved that boat. My teenager sunk it in intercoastal, never to be seen again.
