We will definitely look into Vermont. Looking to go around Portland but will be going to different cities around there.
In New Hampshire we were looking at Franconia Notch State Park for a day trip.

I was looking at doing a similar trip this fall, but COVID. I think that rather than staying in cities and doing day trips, you should look at doing a road trip or a loop and spending each or every other night in different places. My plan was to fly to Boston, drive up the Maine coast then up to North Conway and Lincoln and then completing the loop (or at least part of it) on the Kancamungus Hwy. (the Kanc). That loop can be done either way.
I was thinking of maybe going up to Mt. Washington, then down Bear Notch Rd to the Kanc and over to Lincoln. There are smaller places to stay outside of Lincoln.
