McAllisters, Newks, and Sweet Peppers are all modeled off of Bulldog Deli in Starkville that was started and owned by Robin Fant.

It's a little known fact, but Fant had a hand in forming McAlister's. While Don Newcomb is most often associated with having founded the company, he and Fant were business partners.

Fant says he was looking to grow beyond his single Bulldog Deli franchise and looked at Oxford. He found a place called Checkers, formed a partnership with Newcomb, a dentist, and reopened it as McAlister's. The menu and atmosphere were modeled after the Bulldog Deli.

They opened a second McAlister's in Hattiesburg, which was fine with Fant. But the partners didn't agree on the direction of the company.

Fant said he "basically walked away from the partnership" in the fall of 1992. There was no animosity in the split - just a difference in how the company should grow.

The newcombs haven't been apart of mcalisters in about 20 years. I worked in management for corporate in 2003-2004 and they definitely weren't involved then. I believe Chris, Don's son, actually helped start Moe's Southwest Grill.

Newks original plan when they started opening was to basically put one very close to all existing McAlisters to steal the business.
