re: Hillbilly Elegy is one of the worst movies I've seen in a long, long time

It was a perfectly passable 6.5 out of 10 for me. The two main ladies in the movie were really good, Amy Adams can roll out of bed and put on a great performance.
The grandmother had a line that I want to unironically and seriously use one day. When the people are lining the streets for the grandfather’s funeral, she tells the little boy, they respect us. We are hill people.
Well one day I want to take my son to work and when all of my underlings stand up and come shake my hand when I walk in to lead a meeting, later on tell him, you see that son? They respect us. We’re Swamp people.

I just watched this. I hadn’t read the book but I had read part of this thread and I actually liked it- possibly helped by having low expectations. I don’t think it was some cinematic masterpiece but I still found it a good watch even if it had some cheese to it. I didn’t really think they made the poor folks look stupid either- maybe a little trashy and hopeless but not just outright dumb.
And according to the pics at the end, they nailed Mamaw with Close.

I enjoyed the movie and found it very uncomfortable at times.

Haha yeah oops- I swear I’ve screwed up their names for at least 25 years.

Recently watched this. It did a good job of showing how addicted people are total frickin chaos every time they show up. Nothing is ever their fault and they have to be the center of attention.

Haven't seen the movie but picked up the book when it was relatively new. I was drawn to the basic premise of the book but holy shite it beat you over the head with it incessantly. "I grew up dirt poor, but worked hard and am really smart and look at me now!". He could've whittled the book down to that sentence and I would've came away with the same thoughts. It was just that same phrase repeated over and over and over in different ways.

Ron Howard hasn’t made a good movie since Cinderella Man.
Rush was a entertaining movie, but for the most part I agree.

Just realized this is a super old thread and I repeated myself.
