I don't get sports writers who actively root against the sport they cover especially in a dying industry.
Because their desire to virtue signal outweighs their ability to think rationally with respect to their careers. You have to remember, for the overwhelming number of "journalist"/reporters their pay is shite. That's because with the advent of the internet the breadth of information available and the media outlets to provide it is greater than at any point in history. That means the demand for guys like Thamel is next to nothing.
So how do you supplement low wages? By developing a superiority complex. "Well, I may not get paid a ton, but I sleep well knowing I am the bastion of morality for the mindless populace". The athletes they cover can monetize their "worth" in pay. Lebron James gets paid a ton because of his ability. Journalist "monetize" their worth in a false and wholly self created perception of great importance. Their salaries don't measure their worth (because they aren't very high). Their moral place in the world does.
