Catchers are better and pitchers are throwing harder. That fraction of second makes a huge difference. Not to mention, the statistical analytics would say the risk is not worth the reward when you are playing for home runs. Moving a guy to second is not as valuable as the risk that he gets thrown out.

I had an old Statis-Pro baseball game. On Rickey's card for the 1985 season it said "If player reaches first on his own card player automatically steals second base*". So, yeah, I think Rickey was pretty good at the stolen base thing.

*Batters could reach first from a result on their card or the pitcher's.

Are they? Honestly curious if more guys are thrown out? I’d love to say hitting is better overall but guys can’t hit to big arse open areas of field when it’s given to them.

Long ball is key and you don’t have a bunch of little skinny guys that can run.

Catchers aren’t better. Replay happened and rather than giving the base/tie goes to the runner we now have instances such as guys getting “out” because the beat the throw but they momentarily lost contact with him the base while sliding and the shortstop kept the glove on.

The margin of error is nil now which sucks because base stealing is fun to watch
