It’s the only post-Cold War James Bond film that works. Partly because the villains are former Cold Warriors turned mercs.

Without the cold War, Bond is basically just another Mission Impossible film. Even great movies like Skyfall don't have the same feel when it's just generic bad guy/terrorist #12.
But when you link the Soviets and Eastern Europe, it's classic bond. Goldeneye did it all.
