t's my understanding that he's got a better shot at an Ivy League school than the Service academies. Is this true?

Hard to say, but with the service academies, you need a congressional recommendation. If you're in a populous area, you're going to have more competition for those limited recs.

Fun fact: Al Capone's accountant was persuaded to turn state's evidence in part on the promise of a Naval Academy appointment for his son. It got him whacked, but his son, Edward "Butch" O'Hare became a naval aviator who was awarded the Medal of Honor and for whom O'Hare airport in Chicago is named.

My daughter is a Plebe (freshman) at the Naval Academy. Despite the strange times, she is enjoying it so far. As far as congressional recommendation, yes you do need one. We got one from our local House representative, but I understand that if you need one, the academies can get congressmen from districts with few applicants to write recommendations for candidates from congressional districts with more applicants. Not sure if true, but that's what we heard.

Each Representative has roughly the same number of constituents, but Senators also can appoint people. So, people from populous states do have more competition, it's not much different unless you're comparing Idaho to California.
