I can likely tell you exactly why, I've witnessed enough beginner chess to know all the pitfalls. You're likely trying to begin an attack without completing development first.
It's totally a trap beginners fall into. They'll bring out a knight and a bishop, their opponent who isn't that good will present them something to threaten, and they will. Then they proceed to move the same bishop around like 4 moves in a row or something.
Unless your opponent just blatantly hangs material, the opening should consist of you getting your army mobilized. Moving the same piece multiple times in the opening is rare. There are obviously lines where it happens, but it's just a rule of thumb.
All your minor pieces (bishops and knights) should be off their initial squares and positioned somewhere better. You should be castled and your queen should be on a square that's safe from attack but ready to dive into the thick of things if necessary. Those conditions above usually mean your rooks are connected as well (they protect each other on the back rank).
Once your army is fully mobilized, any attack you make is going to be far more effective.
