My tl;dr Paul Harvey story:
I was friends in flight school with a guy who ended up flying F14s. When I was stationed on the west coast (MCAS Tustin), he was at NAS Miramar. We had met because he went to Iowa State with a couple Marine officers I had met at OCS and later went to TBS and Pensacola with.
Anyway, after I got out of the Marines and moved back to Florida he transferred to an F14 squadron on the east coast at Oceana. The early 90s was a period where the Navy was having a string of incidents with the F14. So I'm home in Florida in the car listening to the Paul Harvey show and he comes on with a news item, "Yesterday off the coast of Virginia, the Navy lost another F14. Both crew members ejected safely." (I think you know where this is headed.)
That evening I thought I'd bust his balls about the superiority of Marine aviation and call him. Right after I mentioned that I had heard Paul Harvey's news and started to put the needle in, there was a pregnant pause in the conversation..."That was me."
