I think it's because a huge number of regular people reacted to the announcement with "WTF this is dumb we don't want this." And then it was pushed on them from all angles for weeks/months, including by media outlets. So when it finally crashed, as we all said it would, it's vindication for the public who were annoyed at being force fed a stupid idea by our "betters".
