Street Corner Symphonies - The Doo Wop Thread

I've been tuned to the Doo-Wop station on Pandora lately (don't give me any grief about Pandora - I'm 79 and don't adapt to change too well).
It seems every third or fourth song on this Doo-Wop station is Frankie Valli. Here are a few examples of what I consider Doo-Wop:
Get a Job - Silhouettes
Duke of Earl - Gene Chandler
Earth Angel - The Penguins
Money Honey - Drifters
Sh-boom -The Chords
Yakety Yak - Coasters
Many, many more, but not Frankie Valli IMO.
That completes my rant - carry on.
ETA: By popular demand I have changed the subject of this thread.

This question has been asked through the years. I don't know if there is an answer.
The other singers do the conventional "ooh" and "ahh" in the background, as well as repeating/harmonizing on Valli's lines. But I can't think of any FS hits that have nonsense backing like "Papa Oo Mow Mow" or "Yip yip yip yip yip yip boom", which is the hallmark of doo wop.

Agree.
Guess they figure the crowd that would tune into that station would dig FV as well.
Either way, that's good shite.

No. They're not doo-wop.
In fact I would consider the Ink Spots and early Mills Brothers to be closer to doo-wop than the Four Seasons. Maybe they're playing them because of their doo-wop set up (high falsetto lead), but even the Beach Boys had more traditional doo-wop elements than FV&4S.
I don't know how often they play cuts from this album, the 1972 reunion of Dion & The Belmonts but it was about as good as it gets. Carlo and Dion were riffing all over the place. So great!
I also really enjoyed this reunion of The Skyliners. Jimmy Beaumont still had the voice of his youth but with the strength of an adult and absolutely killed it. lol. You got me going... I'm a huge doo-wop fan too. Anything at any time from Johnny Maestro is incredible. The man could sing all the way up til the end.
Here's a couple I doubt you've heard, but so-so good. These kids lived in the same neighborhood in the Bronx and ended up cutting records with each other. LINK LINK

THIS is the great doo wop reunion album
The Belmonts without Dion, covering various rock classics acapella.
Belmonts - "Street Corner Symphony" (1972) -- a medley of doo wop standards

It's a good album but not only no Dion and hardly any Carlo Mastrangelo.
Here's Carlo's attempt as a solo which unfortunately for him got crushed by the British Invasion. It's great doo-wop and could have been a hit in the right time frame. RIP to Carlo.
"Ring-A-Ling" - Carlo

Doo wop was fading even before the Beatles. The Seasons and Jay & The Americans adapted to the new style, w/o the wild background singers.
Here's a record by a classic doo wop group evolving w/the new sound. The influence of Jay & The Americans is clear w/the vaguely Latin style.
The Duprees - "Around The Corner" (1965)

Age has nothing to do with it. I'm 37 and have all the songs you mentioned plus hundreds more in my collection.
Good music is good music, period.

I was out and about this morning for a couple of hours listening to the Pandora Doo-Wop station, and they played Roy Orbison. Now he's one of my favorite male singers, but I'm afraid he is not a Doo-Wop artist.
Maybe I'll try something better than Pandora - any recommendations?

The Equallos - "Beneath The Sun" (1962)

The Rays - "Silhouettes" on The Ed Sullivan Show (1957)
A rare extant film clip of a doo wop group performing live (most surviving clips are lip-synced). Per IMDb the group was in a car wreck on the way to the studio, and two members were replaced by relatives on the broadcast.
Note that Buddy Holly and the Crickets, Sam Cooke, Bobby Helms, and The Glenn Miller Orchestra were all on this same episode (Dec 1, 1957)

Just to let the doo wop nation know, a friend copied over 500 real doo wop songs onto a flash drive for me, and I was able to transfer them to my iphone and can play them through carplay on my car's after-market sound system. (don't laugh - for a 79 year old with worse dementia than Biden, I did pretty good).
