As the poster mentioned earlier, the Vegas mass shooting is a good example of when it would be useful, I'm sure there are others.
In general it does seem narcissistic and unnecessary, but I'm not Karen so it doesn't bother me. If somebody feels the need to mark himself as being safe, more power to him.
