Building hurricane shutters

Have been in my house for 10 years now and have never boarded up and do not currently have functioning shutters. My wife has talked about building some shutters for more of a piece of mind basically. I’m handy enough to tackle the job.
Has any of you done this? What style did you go with? Type of wood and hardware used? Any pointers?
Looking for something not too fancy still looks good.

Easiest and cheapest is probably ones with the "Z" bracing on the inside and tongue and groove wood applied to the Z bracing.
I have functioning old style working shutters on my house and all my screens on my windows are inside my house and can move up and down on a tract. If I want to open the top, or bottom window, I just move the screen up or down so bugs can't get in.
With the screens inside, it also makes getting to the shutters a snap and I can open, close and lock them without going outside.
