It's simple. It's just multiplying decimals and/or fractions. Do it enough and it becomes second nature.
I did my masters work on population genetics. At the time I could quickly tell you the chance of a gene showing up 2 or 3 generations down the line.
On the flip side, it also makes going to vegas an eye opening experience. Oh that bet sucks. That bet sucks worse, etc, etc.
