Could? Definitely
Should? Nah
Should? Nah

A report came out a few weeks ago that we were not in the running for him. But that was when everyone thought he would get the Philly job.

I will never understand why people want another teams former coach… unless it’s a former coach like Phil Jackson
Posted on 10/4/20 at 7:37 pm to DaRagingTiger
Because some organizations realize that other organizations did not provide an ex coach with the right players, support, and environment. Think rick Carlisle being fired from pacers. Wins with Dallas. Sometimes coaches have better situational fits just like players

It’s rare to see that though is my point.

Pat Riley, Larry brown, Phil Jackson, chuck Daly, jack Ramsey, doc rivers. All come to mind with having coached another team and then winning championships. That’s 21 championships.. that’s with out even looking anything up

Were they all 70+ years old when they finally won their championship on their 2/3/4 job opportunities?

I don’t love retreads but it’s not rare in the nba.

So if a coach could bring you an nba championship but he was 70 you wouldn’t take him? I’m not sure I understand. Could clarify the point you are trying to make?? The way I understand you is some of these guys had to gain experience and not win for a while before they win a championship. Which be an argument for hiring former head coaches of other teams. Could you name me 21 championships won by rookie head coaches? Pretty sure it’s like nick nurse and maybe bill russel and that’s it.. could be wrong though

What I’m getting at though is we aren’t competing for championships for at least another 3 years. He’ll be 73 years old. Oldest coach to win a championship was 65. I hate to invest years into Zion on a geriatric that’s probably gonna retire before we even start to achieve anything (if we even do). And we’re talking about a head coach that’s never won a championship ever..
I’m not completely against hiring him. I just think he’s a short sighted hire with a win now mentality in a conference thats absolutely loaded that will also more than likely have us looking for another coach in 3 years

This is true, it can and has worked out for many coaches and team. Oftentimes that will be younger/newer guys or proven championship winners. Guys like Kerr or Spoelstra would and should be picked up elsewhere in a heartbeat if they left their current teams.
Others like D’Antoni, or Gentry before we hired him, have a larger sample size over many years with multiple teams. They are who they are. Gentry’s run was predictable as would be D’Antoni’s.
Under him, we may well see the playoffs more consistently. Unfortunately our ceiling would usually be the semis at best, MAYBE a conference finals appearance. But no championships just like his system everywhere else. That’s best case scenario, could easily be worse. Not to mention this team is not built to match his strengths. So why go that route and limit yourself?

So you don’t want to win as much now and get Zion a little playoff experience? What’s the alternative hire? A young coach who maybe coach’s up one or two players but the team tanks as a whole. Nothing mike D’Antoni brings you now subtracts what you are able to do in the future.. and who says you even have to hire him for 3 years?? Most of the coaches available I’d view as stop gap coaches. Might as well win with one

Also if you don’t think pat Riley who is 75 Is only capable of being geriatric and isn’t capable of steering a team in the right direction For the future and in the now then this argument is moot.

Please don’t compare D’Antoni to gentry that’s insulting to the man. One is a hall of famer In the future..
Why go that route?? Name me one other coach available who can get you to the conference finals in 3 years.. he’s the best option and you want player experience.

ETA: sorry didn’t read your other posts originally. In regard to the win now stuff, I dont even think if we tried to compete now we’d make the playoff. that’s how stacked the west will be next season. I’m not saying we should tank but I really don’t think a mini tank for next season is a bad idea. Like be competitive but don’t waste assets on win now players/trades

Pat Riley was a coach who turned executive once the ship was sailing the right way. I’m not sure your point is backed up by anything

Was the ship really sailing the right way when his heat team won 15 games his last season as a coach in this league?

Yup he had leadership through the ranks of hires he’d made over the years.. dude had the foresight to promote a guy with no experience to HIS position. That guy is the most successful coach this decade outside of Steve Kerr
