That's definitely believable for a few reasons:
1. There were a ton of people at the NCG/at parties that weren't online for it.
2. Signing day is in the middle of a normal weekday, so you'll have your normal OTers, MSBers, etc. on, in addition to people looking for recruiting info.
3. People that were available to be online for the NCG probably weren't. It's not like they needed "breaking info" on the game, when they were watching it. But a lot of the people wanting to find out about late Tiger commits came here as their primary source for info.

I lurked for sports info but it was the OT drama that caused me to sign up.

Poor soul...you are one of many who have fallen to it's mystical powers. I'm trying to ban myself from that board now that Football season is getting close...just not enough hours in the day if I want to keep my job and follow sports as well.

Its like quick sand. Even when lurking I find myself checking the OT instead of the news sites, etc. It is better than TV.
