Does anyone buy the "economy would be in shambles if we were free" argument?

Early on in this debacle, there was a strong argument that shutdowns were not really impactful on the economy and may be better for the economy, because if we don't get CV19 under complete control, then there would be no economy because nobody would engage in commerce.
It's become one of those "fact checked" truths that you cannot question.
I am not talking about the entire package (this alleged economic downturn + the medical issues + the deaths). I'm only talking about this specific argument. Does anyone really think there would be less economic activity if there was more freedom in this scenario? I just don't see how that passes muster with how people respond as soon as restrictions are lifted.

I remember seeing "A good economy is useless if everyone is dead!" back in March/April to justify shutdowns.
I think the CDC death rates paint the picture here. Virtually 0% chance of death if you are under the age of 60. And only 5% if you are over 70. The plan always should have been to protect the elderly and let everyone live their lives.
It's a lie up there with "all we had to do was wear masks and social distance for a couple weeks and we would be back to normal by now" line I see all the time. People still are saying this and they are serious. As if these power hungry politicians wouldn't just shift the goalposts and find a new reason to keep us all locked down and under their thumb had the "just wear a mask and social distance for 2 weeks" strategy actually worked.

Yeah this lie is much worse and more tenuous.
That was NEVER the pitch and NOWHERE did that. Places that got Covid under control who aren't islands had to completely shut down society. And it's coming back when they ease restrictions.

Biden tonight: "you can't fix the economy until you fix the covid crisis"

No. Given the survival rate under 60 is north of 99.5%, it’s an absolutely ridiculous claim.

I’m half convinced that in 3792, there will be people acting like the COVID-19 crisis would be gone if the lockdown in 3788 had been just a week longer.

if the economy isn't running well, there won't be hospitals and hospital staff to treat people for ANY condition. hospitals are going out of business all across the country because they stopped elective services. that means hospital staff are being laid off and people aren't getting procedures that they normally would be
