They kind of did force you. By making older forms obsolete, then discontinuing them, sort of make us adopt things we might not wish to adopt. But it's still a market and choice thing, we can often go without the newest.

The BIG difference is that the government didn't force us to send millions of VHS tapes to the landfill in favor of DVDs. The market did that. The consumer clearly favored DVDs. The government didn't say, "After X year, you can no longer watch Snow White on your VCR. You must buy a DVD player and the movie on DVD." Hell, if you have a VCR and a VHS copy of Snow White, have at it!
