There's a difference between not performing well at the debates (which I agree wouldn't hurt him) and exposing the fact that you've got significant, significant cognitive decline. Bailing will hurt him, yes, but an appearance could permanently end his chances in less than an hour.

They've barely been able to get him on camera for recorded bits, where they get to do take after take. Live events have been even more scarce, short, and carefully scripted. They don't want him to be seen any more than is absolutely necessary.
