Started 0-3 but beat #3 Tennessee in Knoxville. Finished 7-5 but with a loss to Louisville in the Fiesta Bowl.

Alabama was crushed in that game. I believe the only reason they made the Fiesta Bowl is because several teams declined after Arizona voted against celebrating MLK Day.

Only comparable opening game is when Arizona State whipped preseason #1 and two-time defending National Champ Nebraska 19-0.

Just looked it up. That was Nebraska’s second game. They crushed Michigan State in the opener. ASU knocked off Washington and North Texas before playing NU.

Also why did Tennessee and Ole Miss play in Memphis?

Both Ole Miss and State regularly sold home games away for money from the late 70's-mid 90's. Ole Miss played "home" games in Memphis against Tennessee in 1980, 1990, and 1996. The last time State did this was with Florida in 1989(Tampa) and 1991(Orlando).

I feel like alternate home sites were big for lots of teams up until then. We all know about Arkansas playing in Little Rock and Jackson, MS being a site. In Texas, I want to say Texas Tech played someone like Baylor in the Cowboys old stadium, and I know the Alamodome hosted some SWC action.

The game that really started to put our program on the map. Thanks to the Pipe!

I remember it was a night game and I was out during the day and came home in the 3rd quarter shocked at the score. I think asu recorded 3 safeties in that game. Also, Nebraska hung like 70 on ASU in Lincoln the previous year.

Suffice to say this game wasn’t an aberration, ASU was great that year.

It's weird how I remember it as the first game of the season for both schools.

But even better, Nebraska had just blown out Michigan State and were the clear #1 going for a three-pete.

The only other two teams to give Nebraska a game the rest of the season was a win against #5 Colorado and an L to Texas in the Big12 Title game.

Yep. I wanna say it was on Fox. I was 10 years old when that game was on, but I also thought Nebraska was invincible. They were dominated that night.

Louisville was no joke that year. They were still a mid-major in FB terms. They were an Independent, and played a relatively easy schedule. I see now...they tied San Jose State in the opener. That SJSU team finished 9-2-1. The losses were by 3 to Washington and 1 to Cal. That’s damn good for that programs.

The Cards also lone loss was to Southern Miss. The same USM squad mentioned earlier for knocking off Alabama and Auburn. Let’s take a look at Southern Miss aside from Coach Hallman and Brett Favre.

Notable wins:
@ #13 Alabama 17-14
V Louisville 25-13
@ #15 Auburn 13-12

Losses:
@ Georgia 18-17
@ Mississippi St 13-10
@ VaTech 20-16
V #23 NC State 31-27 (All-American Bowl)

Three big wins. 4 losses by a combined 12 points. All of those games on the road, and all against P5 schools. Impressive.
