Giving running backs huge contracts in the NFL is dumb. Been proven time and time again.

What’s the contract history success of RBs who see 100 targets a year?

2019 chiefs - Damien Williams 2/5.1
2018 patriots - James white 3/12, Sony 4/9.6
2017 eagles - Blount 1/1.25, ajayi 4/2.5
2016 patriots - Blount 1/1.1, Dion Lewis 2/2.6
2015 broncos - CJA 3/1.5, Ronnie hillman 4/3
2014 patriots - Blount 2/1.7, Vereen 4/3.4
2013 Seahawks - lynch 4/30
2012 Baltimore - ray rice 1/7.7
2011 giants - Ahmad Bradshaw 4/18
2010 packers - James starks 4/2
2009 saints - Pierre/ bell / bush
Just some quick evidence of why paying running backs a substantial amount has not resulted in winning Super Bowls. Regardless of his ability to catch, kamara is not worth the amount we paid for him. I hope he proves this pattern wrong and we win a super bowl. But the patriots have proven you don’t need one rb that can catch and run when you can pay one of each very little to excel in each respectively. The rest of the teams show you don’t have to over pay a running back to win a super bowl with how the game is played these days.

Meh. 1) I don’t think this is a “huge contract” with only $36 million being guaranteed. 2) More importantly, he’s not your typical running back. He’s a great receiver too. And not like Fournette who just catches behind the LOS dump offs, AK motions out and actually runs routes. 3) He’s valuable beyond his mere raw production numbers as well. His simply being on the field and having to be accounted for opens up a lot of other guys.
I think his averages are gonna improve significantly over last year when he was hurt, but his raw production might actually go down as other new weapons’ might go up. But that will actually prove his overall value.
