Yeah, you really need to read the the stand alone books.
Even beyond the awesomeness and what you just posted, Gorst, Brocks Mom, and Black Calder are all main characters in the second stand alone, you are missing a crap ton of backstory for the new trilogy.

I figured as much. The local Barnes and Nobles doesn't have it. I need to stop being lazy and just order them.
