I have a 2010 GMC Sierra with the 5.3 and this is definitely an issue. I had to replace the lifters a few years ago, however I'm pretty sure this isn't as big of an issue with the newer motors like the one you have.

I have an '09 Chevy and had the displacement on demand crap turned off and when the lifters started coming apart, the dealership blamed it on that.
