I don't pretend to be a mechanic. I can usually fix things that break, but diagnosing isn't my strong suit.

Was cutting the yard on my Cub Cadet RTZ-L. Deck down, blades on, cutting fine. Suddenly lost all power to rear wheels. Smoke came rolling out the back, smelled more like a plastic burning smoke than anything. I killed it to let it cool down before I go poking around.

Any ideas on what to look for? I didn't see any hanging belts or noticeable liquid drips when I looked before I left it to cool down

Sounds like a belt broke.

Sound like a belt.
Something could have got caught up in the pulleys.

The reason why I say this is you would have had issues with the hydro gear Ezt transmission slowly losing power over time if it was the transmissions.

Transmission drive belt needs to be replaced. This just happened to me last Saturday afternoon. The belt was stretched and there was a thinner part where it just sat Still on the drive pulley. I tugged on it some To move a bit and, without deck running, I was able to crank it up and drive it to the trailer and get it home. Easy fix.

Figured it out. A green pinecone was wedged between belt and pulley. Got it out but the belt was shredded to hell so it's out of commission for the day until I can find a replacement belt

On my exmark U can loosen a bolt on the hydro pumps to allow the mower to be towed if you need to move it to a location where you can work on it

Recently changed the drive belt on my Cub Cadet RZT50. I would recommend against getting a generic belt off Amazon and going with a genuine from a CC dealer. I tried to belts off Amazon that were just slightly too long and they didn't last half a cut. Switched to an OEM belt from a local dealer and no problems since.

The pulleys by most mfg’s are designed a certain way that the oem belt will work the best to discourage using non oem belts.

Not to say a generic bet will not work.
Usually the groove is off enough to not get maximum results.

Your clutch could be worn out. Overheated slipping and burned up?
