I think the place was overhyped and they definitely had issues keeping businesses in there. I think it could have survived for the remainder of the year but for covid. I don’t think it had much of a shelf life past that.

Government has improved greatly over the last ten years. However, many of these places will unfortunately shut down in the near future. I cannot see red stick social making it. Great concept with bad luck. Elsie’s will be fine. Radio bar will likely survive. Superior has been there forever and will survive. A few other places may make it. I’m not sure changing the structure of the street will have its desired affect.

Red Stick social seemed like a really interesting concept with an awful location and horrendous execution.

I agree Government St will see further closures, as will likely all areas of Baton Rouge.

As for White Star vendors, the ones that put out a good product that I went to seemed to have plenty of staying power. I'd imagine in a town like Baton Rouge there are plenty of inexperienced operators who get in a food hall and quickly fail. It might take longer to fail in a dense city like Chicago, but in Baton Rouge it wouldn't take long at all.

This guy gets it.

Does anybody remember Catfish Town in the mid-1980's? Fun place with lots of restaurants, shops, and bars. It didn't last too long, either.

I was thinking about the whole Catfish Town concept in relation to the Government Street "vision" as well. It is a perfect analogy. Very similar hype for both.

This type of business model will not work in this city. Exceptional businesses with exceptional products will survive and thrive, however.
Prove me wrong.

Why? White Star market died mostly because the successful vendors left to move to thier own solo locations then Covid hit. . It was always crowded. No reason to think it won't come back.

Government St restaurant scene was booming prior to Covid and will after Covid. No greater effect than anywhere in the City, maybe less due to the built in yuppie/hipster population ( capital heights etc.).
Have you been to the Beer Garden? It's always crowded.

Have you driven Mid City Government Street since the changes? It's working very well.

Once they get the landscaping in it will look great too.
