Honestly, I find it hard to feel sorry for him. It's not like he said this in a personal private conversation. It's not like it was a tweet from 10 years ago. He said it while at work, on the air, live.
Perhaps, he didn't realize they were live when he let it slip, still doesn't negate the fact that he is at freaking work. And he should always assume that whatever he says with the headset on is being recorded.
There are some things you simply never say or do while you're at work. It's not that complicated.

Yeah I’m baffled by it too. At almost any professional job in America, if you say that word and the wrong person hears it, you are in deep shite and likely fired. And he said it, with emphasis, into a microphone.
