Jerrell Powe is finally eligible to play at Ole Miss. It will be interesting to see how his career goes. A fan on Rivals says that he dominated at the Ole Miss camp but is extremely out of shape and had to take breaks because he was so winded.

Thats good news, glad he finally pulled through.

Bad news for the SEC though.

I know Powe wants to play and has worked to become eligible, but the guy probably doesn't belong in any college. And even if he does, students with learning disabilities cannot devote the amount of time it takes to participate in college athletics and still make their grades... unless they have loads of help.

It took 3 years for Chad Lavalais to do the same thing. Why do people make fun of Powe?

Exactly, it's a testament to how our school systems are failing our youth, especially the poor and black, in inner cities and rural locations, not funny at all, they'll be providing my social security.

I think it's hilarious that you're making fun of his academic prowess.

seriously...GOOD FOR THAT DUDE...he could have become an even fatter piece of rural shite that got into trouble with the law or lived a totally worthless life but he stayed with it and now he is at least getting the opportunity to make a really lucrative career for himself

You guys are right. The school system failed Powe. But are universities supposed to make up for the mistakes of K-12 schools? They are institutions of HIGHER learning. And students who can't hack it don't need to be there, and they certainly do not deserve a scholarship.

I'm not as familiar with the Lavalais situation. Maybe he didn't deserve a college scholarship either.

I think you are confusing athletic scholarships and academic scholarships. A university is allotted a certain amount of scholarships per year and a student athlete deserves this scholarship when they have met the requirements to get into said university.

I wouldn't say that these kids don't deserve the scholarships because what they did (in the case of Powe and Lavalais) is work and stick with the plan of attending college. They didn't initially meet the prerequisites to get into college but eventually got it together. I'm not going to hold that against them as tigerinstaug said above.

Chad's mom never told a reporter her son can't read.
