My theory is they know that Trump will be hard to unseat. Biden is at the end of his career so if he loses no big deal. Won’t hurt him.
Anticipate some fractures in the Republican Party after Trump. Use the next 4 years to start building the younger (and more popular) Dems. Bank on their popularity with a fractured GOP in 2024 and put everything in taking presidency and both houses next election.

Decent idea in theory.
In practice, the Dems have a huge bench issue because so many of their candidates are single-issue candidates or represent hard blue states.
I don’t see any remaining Dems with crossover appeal, which is why I think Hillary was their last shot for quite a while.

And then a very capable Don Jr. comes along and takes the same coalition into the White House.
