Could be a steal if he becomes a wide receiving/returning duel threat.

Absolutely not. Just think about how much of a game changer he has been for them. If anything, I'd say they possibly got him at a good price depending on what exactly is guaranteed or bonus.

its a pretty cool contract he only gets that much if in 2 years he has put up stats of a number one receiver.

Yes b/c return men are usually not consistently that effective for several years in a row. Dante Hall, Desmond Howard, Az-Zahir Hakim, etc.

they are paying him to be a #1 wide receiver , not a return specialist

Exactly and if he is their #1 WR then they are in serious trouble offensively. The only chance they have to score is special teams.

lol...Hey I'm a proud Gator but have NEVER been a fan of Grossman's. I watched him play many of times in HS and had a buddy that knew him pretty good. Total a-hole, he had a solid career at UF but I knew he would never be anything in the NFL. You can't take the gambles he takes with his throws unless your last name is Farve and even he got in trouble with them many of times.

Yes. Overpaid. gets paid 7.5 million do touch the ball 5 times a game? I know he has a chance of scoring 2 of the 5 but what does that do when you only score 7 to 14 points a game? VERY OVERPAID IMO. His 1st 2 years were sick. unreal. and they still havent won a superbowl. Can he actually get better at returning punts/kicks than he already is?

I'd say that yes he can get better. I think the reasoning is that he is going to be a utility type player. And if he can get 7-14 points I think they are usually banking on having a stout defense. Of course they are getting a little older now. But they are still solid.

I know there are other teams that would pay him this amount.

Yes that kind of $$ would reflect he is a #1 WR, but he is not.

I was having this debate with someone earlier about who would you rather pay Colston or Hester.

Personally I'm taking the guy who's caught 160+ balls and close to 20 TDs for me the last 2 seasons

exactly the $40 million is a maximum value.

The deal features escalators of $10 million in each of the final two years, which Hester can reach through receptions, yardage and other targets.
