ETA: I've noticed that he has developed a little escape hatch that he uses when he can't recall something. He starts into something, blanks, and then says, "oh, nevermind, I'm not going to say it".
I've seen it several times now. Once you see it, you can't unsee it.

I honestly think when he does that, he’s actually got somebody off-camera frantically running an index finger across their throat as in “DON’T SAY IT!!! DON’T SAY IT!!! CUT IT OFF!!!”

My personal favorite- at one campaign stop, he introduced Bernie as “The President” and then, minutes later forgot his name and referred to Bernie as “my friend Vermont”
