Japan needed everything, oil, iron and food.
They were insane to spread out onto remote islands and strand forces. They were so spread out they couldn’t defend what they needed. US submarines didn’t make things any better for them. Rivalry between their Army and Navy was a huge problem that undermined their success. Their big mistake early was sending forces to the Aleutian Islands and not concentrating forces at Midway. Their early arrogance and feelings of racial superiority undermined their planning and execution of battle plans.
