Most people in this country in 1860 lived and died in the same little corner of their state that they were born in and grew up in.

So I ask, why would the average Southerner fight for something or someone they barely knew or didn't know at all? In 1860, you were a South Carolinian or a Virginian before you were an American. And if some entity hundreds of miles away invaded your territory with the intent to subdue you and yours, how would you react?
