I worked for the state. Couldn't get out fast enough.

When I first started I was gung ho and introducing a few new processes to improve efficiency. The reaction was more negative than positive.

There was also a TON of free time in my department. Sounds great in theory but it was incredibly depressing. It felt like I was wasting my life away.

Layers of management limits productivity and progress.

Excelling at the job wasn't rewarded. Raises weren't merit based. The guy who just fills a chair everyday can be making more than the top guy in the office, just because he has been employed longer.

It may not be like that everywhere but it took me from disliking the government to despising it.

eta: The people I know who work for the state are now back at work.

As did I. I didn’t believe the stories of how lazy state workers were.

Most of my office mates were cool, but Its an entire different mindset. I was climbing the walls bored. Left after 6 months.
