Buddy of mine just sold his camp right near it. Remember hearing some wild stories about the place, but never ventured. Funny thing is there is a run way, airport strip right next to it in the middle of bumfrick Sabine parish. I asked my buddy if this was a drug drop zone. He said yes it was a drop zone alright, but not drugs, whores from Dallas and Houston.

Yes - we had a place on the lake near there in the early 80’s - late 90’s. That place was nuts. And I heard lots of stories about the use of the airstrip.

Back in the ‘70s I worked for a big timber company that had thousands of acres of land On TB and there was a bar down around Zwolle that was pretty wild. Did Ethel have a bar? The place used to have a lot of fights. The Driftwood name triggered this memory.
I remember a guy telling me that he saw a fight there one night when a guy took a large kitchen knife to another fellow. Claimed he cut him under each armpit and inside both thighs.
Bled out in minutes in front of the place with a crowd watching it.

Restaurant on one side and bar on the other, restaurant was the one and only place to sit down eat back then 70-75. Member getting the all you could eat catfish as a kid with parents. Baws from all over would get wrecked by the Zwolle mafia on Saturday nights in the bar and some kilt.
Dads boss missed that strip in a King Air mid 70's that killed his wife and pilot. Bend still had standing timber back then.

We had a camp just down the road when I was a kid. I remember seeing Bill Dance, Jimmy Houston and all those guys sitting at a table in the restaurant. Me and some buddies decided to try the bar when we were in high school. I walked in first, got halfway in and noticed no one followed me in.
I had forgotten about that plane wreck.

Ethel Jones was quite a character. The Driftwood was a go to spot in high school. There were a few fights, every now and then, but always a good time. The crowd was a combination of hookers, rednecks, businessmen, and politicians.

My mother's cousin was once mayor of Many, her husband was John Godfrey, a local lawyer, he represented Jones after she shot and killed a guy robbing her trailer one night. She shot him 6 times reloaded, and shot him 6 more, I believe the guy was un-armed, it was ruled self defense.
After thinking about it the women tha did the shooting might not have been Jones, but someone named something like Easley or Beasley, but was still heavily associated with the Driftwood.

All I can say was that place was magical as a young adult and good times.

Our camp is right down the road and we still launch at the Ethel’s ramp. Not many people even know it’s there so it’s usually just us, even during the spawn.

King Air is alot of plane to get on that strip. It was kinda sketchy in a 172 size plane. Uncle taxi'd across the road to fill the plane with fuel.

Went in there when I was maybe 20 and a long, long time ago. I remember the locals went crazy when Smoke on the Water played on the jukebox. The local clubbers danced like crazy. They didn't have very good moves but better than ours. Our group wanted to chuckle but decided it was best to just leave before we got focused on to get our arses kicked.
