any opinions, thoughts, suggestions would be appreciated. It's only a 6 hour drive which is a closer trip than the Ozarks for us low landers.

Passed through there on Father's Day on a road trip with my daughters. We went to the Ouachita Mountains just north of there; which were pretty neat. 67 degrees in late June. We drove along a scenic route along a mountain ridge called the Talimena Byway. Very pretty views with overlook turnouts every so often. Nice change
of pace; we left New Orleans at 8 AM and got there around 4 PM, spent the rest of the afternoon there and spent the night in Ft. Smith, Arkansas before heading home.
Broken Bow, Idabel, Poteau; all those towns are small towns that have seen better days. They all have a Choctaw Casino and several marijuana dispensaries. Oh, and most of them have Native American-influenced nicknames for their high schools- Chiefs, Warriors, Braves, and in one case (I think Broken Bow) SAVAGES.

Broken Bow is ok, it has some hills and a nice river, but it's not the Ozarks. The Ouchita mountains around Hot Springs are nicer than Broken Bow....although that may also be the Ouchitas.
And who do you think named those High schools....Cheif?

Broken Bow is nice. We just went for a long weekend in early June.
The lake and rivers are nice. Some decent hikes. Plenty of nice cabins to rent.
It doesn't compare to NW Arkansas, but its a lot closer (only 2.5 hours for me), so it makes for a nice trip.
