They don't last longer but they burn evenly.
I quit smoking ten years ago but I used to pack my cigarettes all the time.
I think the habit of packing started when pre-rolled cigarettes first came about. Some brands might tamp down the tobacco more loosely than others. Packing tightens this up.

I haven't had a smoke in several years, but I know that "packing" cigarettes just knocks out valuable tobacco.
