I’ve had major improvement this year and I’ve only dropped 5 strokes. I think that’s what he is getting at. Going from 20 to 8 would take me like 5 years minimum. But that’s just me.
I also like to set lofty goals. My goal of getting to a 13 from a 20 was lofty imo. That way if I fail and end up at 14 I’ve still had a great year.

I’ve been chasing the ever elusive club of breaking 80 for a while now. Last two rounds have been 81 and 80. Had a 3 putt from about 15 feet on the last hole to shoot 80 on the number. I like the ideas given in this thread by some. I like the no 3 putts idea for sure.

Break 100 (joke all you want). Picked up the game 3 years ago and have been teaching myself how to play.
I’ve gotten to 101 twice and stay around 105-108. Putting kills me.
Another was improve chipping and that has definitely happened.

I 3 putted on 18 to shoot a 91. Was not thrilled.

Breaking 100 is a big deal, no joke. You will get it soon.

You want to go in together on that boat?

The big difference maker for me was my chipping and putting.
This is true for most golfers.
Scores go down with:
1. No more than two putts per hole.
2. No more than one chip/pitch per hole.
3. No penalty strokes.
I’ve heard you should not try a shot that you cannot execute 80% of the time IF there is a OB or hazard in the landing zone.

My goals from the 2020 goals post:
Haven't broken par on 9 holes, yet.
Handicap isn't in the 3s. I'm down to a 4.9, which is close to my all time low. I feel like I'm starting to turn the corner, though. Had a rough patch when I changed putters and then went back to my old faithful.
Played in the state am, but there was no qualifying. Didn't sniff the cut, but was proud of how I played. Could have definitely played better, but I didn't embarrass myself.
I've walked more holes than I've rode, but that was seriously aided by Covid.
I have probably averaged 9 holes a week, which was aided by COVID. But I'm also playing 18 about every other week, so it works out.
I stopped practicing about a month ago. But before that, I was practicing a good bit. It's just too hot and I don't have any tournaments that I'm trying to focus towards.
When I'm playing a serious round, I've started focusing more. But I play way too many non-serious rounds for this to be a true goal. Tough to grind over a three footer for par when Let It Go is blaring in the background and my youngest is walking through my line.

Break par on 9 holes
Lower handicap to less than a 3
Qualify for the State Am and make the cut
Walk more holes than I ride
Play, on average, 9 holes a week
Practice once a week
Do a better job of focusing on every shot for every round (that's nebulous, but it's the best way I can describe it)

There’s nothing wrong with having lofty goals. I’m mature enough to understand that my large goal is going to take time and lots of work. And I’m 100% ok with that.
Well, obviously, but to anyone who has been playing golf for a while knows that dropping your handicap from 20 to 5 in 5 months is ridiculous unless this isn't your 2020 goal. If you expect to post this and not get flamed for it, I'm not sure what to say.
Your buddies experience of shooting under 70 2 years after picking up golf is an EXTREME outlier.
but best of luck

It will happen soon.
I have messed up a bunch of good rounds with an untimely 3 putt or tee shot OB.
80 is only a shite worse than 79, but it feels the same as 82 or even 83 mentally. Weird?

January 1, I was 14.1 index. Now at 8.7; try to get to 7.8 index.
GHIN update this morning: handicap index 7.7.
I did it!
Now I need a new goal.

My goal is an even par round by the end of the year, not to be scratch because that isn’t happening this year (I started the year an 11 and am now a 7). I’ve had 3 rounds of +6 and a round of +4 This year, all 4 of those rounds could have been par with a few better decisions or a few dropped putts. My +4 round included a triple bogey...
I think par is a lofty goal for me by the end of the year but I believe it’s attainable

my goal is to play golf.
but seriously it would have been one under par round. i've played a handful of times this year and shot mid to high 70s. then last wednesday i shot a 69 at the farm. felt like cheating though because the greens were so easy.
4 bogies, 5 birdies, 1 eagle, 8 pars. crazy round.
eagle was on 18 too. had no business shooting at the green, but YOLO.
