TIL on Walter Cronkite's Final Presidential Election Broadcast...

it was the Great State of Louisiana that proved the decisive result to push CBS's electoral tally over the magic number of 270 and officially call a President-Elect
YouTube
1980, the night Ronald Reagan absolutely massacred incumbent President Jimmy Carter in the election
By the time CBS actually called Louisiana (and thus the election)... both Carter & Mondale had already given their separate concession speeches as the result was already beyond doubt but CBS wouldn't pull the trigger on a call until the magic number was hit.
and would you believe it... just 3 days before... the FINAL CBS/NYT pre-election polls showed a dead heat
oh... and near the start of this video... Cronkite throws over to another guy who was asked what a Reagan Administration would look like... and part of the following diatribe was "In comes the 10 Commandments, out goes the Bill of Rights"

It was Louisiana, according to our CBS News count of the states that put him over the top. Louisiana's electoral votes, ten electoral votes, added to the 265 he had before. That's a total of some 26 states he has now won, 27 with Louisiana now, and 275 electoral votes to merely 35 electoral votes for Jimmy Carter.

Pinkie Cronkite and Rather were so bummed out about Reagan. They contained it better than the rabble did in 2016, though.
Way better.
Way better.

I watched a show on xinn about the 68 Democratic primary.
You could tell that the news media was pissed that Humphrey won over McCarthy.
It was almost as bad as when Trump won.

That's putting it in the mildest terms possible.
The left literally rioted in the streets destroying property and injuring others, the bureaucracy of the federal government started a massive frame job accusing the President-Elect of being a secret Russian agent and politicians and voters from the left hurled every possible and imaginable insult at the President and did everything they could to harass his supporters.
The 2016 election and its aftermath is unlike anything ever seen in American history.

Correct. Unfortunately, all of the people who will write and publish the history of this period will push a strong leftist propaganda angle, so your grandchildren will read about a Pres who was a Russian agent and the glorious resistance movement against him.

Notice how the republicans were identified as blue until the 92 election.

That's an odd statement comparing Jimmy Carter to Ronald Reagan. If anything, you'd think it would be the other way around.

interestingly... another video that had caught my interest was the news broadcasts of the end of the 1968 California Democratic Primary
aka... the night RFK was assassinated right after his victory speech following his wins in both the South Dakota and California primaries
(if I heard correctly... Reagan was unopposed in the California GOP primary and thus the news stations didn't really care about it even though Nixon eventually won the GOP nomination)

The red = GOP and blue = Dem came from a USA Today map of the counties. The newspaper picked GOP as red to avoid communist references to the Dems.

Today's left considers that a good thing.
