The Way Too Early East Baton Rouge Mayoral Election Thread

I figured we could take a break from the national shite slinging contest to check in on a race local to many of you.
The three candidates as of June 22, 2020 are:
1. Mayor Sharon Weston Broom (D)
2. Councilwoman Tara Wicker (D)
3. Councilman Matt Watson (R)
I believe Broome is very vulnerable, but it will take a solid campaign to dethrone her.

I’m hoping SWB takes some fire from the left by C Denise Marcelle and others entering the race.
I’d want Watson to win but I figure Wicker is the most realistic option.

It will be a Broome/Watson runoff and come down to who wins the low turnout runoff.
Watson will probably get the most votes in the primary because it will be Presidential Election Day and Broom/Wicker will split the Democrat vote.
Broome only won by 4,000 votes in 2016 and even though the race way a blowout she was helped some by there being a US Senate runoff on that day as well. The runoff in 2020 will be a stand alone election and may help Watson with the reduced black turnout.

I think Wicker sneaks into the run off. While I will vote for Watson in the run off, I’m voting for wicker in the primary. I’ve met her a few times and she is a good person. I’ve always felt that if I met an elected person and they seemed genuine and good then I’d be willing to vote for them. I’d rather Watson but it wouldn’t bother me if Wicker made it.
To everyone who wants Watson to win, vote for Wicker in the primary.

This is absurd thinking. Watson has to actually make the runoff.

I will vote for Watson but I fear he has zero chance of winning once it goes to a runoff.

I saw done Watson signs yesterday in Tara. First I’d seen.
