Shot a 95 today

I started playing golf again about 6 months ago and more frequently during the Stay at Home when you could play BREC courses free.
Anyway, we got in 18 at Beaver Creek this morning and I shot below 100 for the first time in years. My putting killed me and should be my next game changer that I need to work on.

96 for me today. Below 90 is what I’m hoping for by July. Shot a 91 the other day. Played today in brutal, brutal winds.
I can handle 3 putts. It’s the blow ups the really bother me. Skulling that wedge shot over the green, chunking that iron about 30 yards. Those are the ones that kill me. I 3 putted for par on 18 today. Was on the green in 2. Hit a 218 yard approach shot with a 31 degree hybrid into the green and proceeded to 3 putt
Par doesn’t kill me though, it’s those 7 shot holes

Yes, I haven't been down there in a long while. The last time was an 89 at Westside in Brusly (goat ranch).
I really didn't have any blow ups today. I did have a handfull of fat shots that didn't go far but I missed two birdies because I couldn't commit to the distance on my putt.

31 degree hybrid?

Yep. I was struggling with my 6-7 irons and made an impulse buy a few weeks ago. Bought a taylor made sim max hybrid. I have T300 irons, so in my bag the loft falls between 7 and 8 iron. I hit it a lot more consistently than my 7 iron. 200 yards of carry isn’t normal for me with the club, but I had a stiff wind at my back and caught it more pure than any shot I hit all day. Right now I use my 6 and 7 iron almost exclusively for punch out shots until I can get a little better with them.
100–120 PW
130-140 9
150- 165-8
170-190 31 hybrid
200+ 5 wood
That’s sort of my go to right now when it comes to club/range. I’m starting to hit my irons a lot better though, but still think the hybrid will have a place in my bag.

Weren’t you hitting driver only 230 just a week or so ago? Now your 7 iron equivalent is going 218?
ETA you might have a shaft or loft issue with your driver if you’re only hitting it 15 yards farther than your 7 iron

Keep at it. I started back up about 8 months ago. Ended up getting new irons, driver, and 3 wood. Gradually dropped to mid 90s. Goal was below 90.
Shot a few rounds in the high 80s in April. Now I am consistently between 87-92 with the occasional 81/83.
Putting/shortgame is the killer. Over half my shots each round are chips/putts.

Phil’s chipping 101
Here’s Phil’s short video on chipping. If you have more time, watch his Secrets to the short game. It changed my entire thought process on chipping, pitching, and putting. My scores are way better. I rewatch this all the time.

There was a 25 mph tail wind on that shot. I’ve used a 5 wood on every second shot on that hole since I’ve played the course until yesterday. I wasn’t pointing out “look how far it hit it now” but highlighting how much wind there was.

So you starting playing less than 2 months ago, shot a 91, and are hitting an 8 iron 150plus. Did you play earlier in life and pick it back up, or is Tiger Woods you coach?

He said he spends like 4 hours at the range so he is putting in work.

Didn’t say you were. I’m just pointing out that you might have some loft or shaft issues with your clubs

I didn’t play earlier in life. 91 is the best I’ve ever shot. I’m making expeditious advances because I’ve practiced in some capacity every day since I started. I’ve played stick and ball sports my entire life. I’m not a senior that didn’t play sports earlier in life that’s just picking up the game. I'm not a prodigious talent, I think golf is like anything else. The more you practice the better you'll get. How quickly you get better depends on how much you practice.
I’m also playing a links course. The wind makes it tricky, but there aren’t trees lining the fairways. I can hit shots now to get out of trouble that I wouldn’t be able to on other courses. However, I think if everyone here played for the next 45 days in some capacity, they would be a better golfer at the end than they are now, would you agree with that?
This is a really hard game, but puring one up off the center of the face every now and then is going to happen. My irons also have a pretty low loft. My 8 iron is 33 degrees of loft, so equivalent to some 7 irons. I don’t hit any of my irons with consistency yet, but yea when I hit one clean it goes a long way. I’m a long way from 70s-80s golf. Honestly I get pretty frustrated on the course with my bad shots because I know I’m capable of hitting good ones.

Probably. I’d been swinging a senior flex titleist. I’ve played the last few rounds with a stiff flex Mizuno that a coworker is letting me borrow. I’m hitting that one further and straighter. Lower ball flight so I’m getting good run out with it too when the course isn’t saturated
My swing is also improving- 230 was probably my absolute max drive a few weeks ago. Not the case now

I shot a 101 saturday.
Before May I hadn't played since last summer and I probably only played 3 times all last summer.
So in May I go out and shoot a true 96 (no foot wedges, no pick ups unless people were waiting on me and it was within a foot)
So i'm feeling pretty good.
I play 3 more times every time getting closer to the 80s.
Last week I shot a 90
I'm feeling pretty good
I played saturday and shot a 101
This game sucks

Good deal - Had my first kid and moved shortly after about 5 years ago, and my ability to play went to practically non-existent. Ive made it a point to get out there a few times a week since we went into quarantine(Nola).

Played there last Friday, my putting killed me as well. One that really pisses me off was on 13 (par 5) I had a pitching wedge in. Hit the back of the green and proceeded to four put for bogey. This was on top of a number of three putt bogeys as well. I donbt think I made a single putt outside of 3 feet

I don't know what pisses me off more. 3 putting for par or 3 putting for bogey.
If I get to the point of pitching wedge in on a par 5 though, (and sounds like a gap wedge would've been the correct club) I think I can live with that and hope the short game eventually comes.
You must hammer it off the tee
