Whitlock years ago was a columnist for the KC Star and he was unafraid to give controversial opinions....he hasn't changed at all so he's not going after a niche. I don't always agree with him but this isn't some orchestrated plan.

This.

It's laughable to suggest he's simply pandering for a niche audience now. That's exactly the type of social media scoreboard mentality he's talking about. Sincere opinions and civil discourse be damned.

From a man concerned about Lin's " 2 inches of pain"? Al Campanis lost his career after making a similar comment about " Blacks not having buoyancy".

Exactly, most if not all true debate has been squashed at least as far as socio-political arguments surrounding sports go - you take the wrong side you are fired or are afraid to voice them out of fear of being fired. I know for a fact there are folks at ESPN who'd like to voice a different opinion but they know it would be career suicide, not just right now but anytime.

Then all who are left to debate are those like us on forums like this hiding behind a keyboard in anonymity whose posts are cherry-picked for the worst and used as "see this is what they are like" glimpses to reinforce the one-sided agenda.

It's a sad and frustrating reality.
